Video transcript:

We’re twelve episodes in to our new podcast, “Mastering Workplace Culture.” Each Tuesday, co-host Mark Babbitt and I bring you unfiltered conversations with leaders who’ve transformed their organizations from the inside out. No jargon. No buzzwords. No BS.

Here are two insightful short clips from our recent recordings with Amber “AJ” Jordan, CEO of Desert Sage Health Center in Mountain Home, Idaho and Susan Thorn, director of occupational health & safety at Community Health System in Fresno, Calif.

In AJ’s clip, she responds to a question about what tools and techniques she integrated when they started their culture refinement process. The two things she emphasized were 1) they didn’t expect that every leader and team member would immediately be on board with the culture change, and 2) they started with their leadership team. The senior leaders were rated on their values and behaviors alignment by their staff, and the leadership team was rated on how well it modeled the best practices of values-driven leadership teams.

It was nearly three years of those learning experiences and intentional refinement of the leadership expectations before they introduced their values and behaviors in team members’ performance reviews.

In Susan’s clip, she explains how a personal communications coach helped her understand that planning a large project that she has engineered deeply is not the best way to bring the people along. Those who are impacted want to know what, why, when and how. They want to ask questions and make suggestions since they’re closest to the work on many project rollouts.

By including people, taking the time to listen to ideas and concerns, Susan learned that the project goes much more smoothly. The people are involved, and the project’s outcome is valuable to them.

These culture leaders didn’t understand the nuances of effective culture refinement when they started. Learn what they’ve learned, and it may help your culture efforts go more smoothly.
