The dude abides: 7 business lessons from “The Big Lebowski”

My co-founder, Amir Glatt, and I named our company Duda after The Dude in “The Big Lebowski,” one of our all-time favorite movies. Since then, we’ve integrated some of the spirit of the film into our office culture. Duda’s meeting rooms have names such as The Dude, The Ringer, Urban Achiever and Pinky Toe. At our company’s happy hours, White Russians are the star of the show.

Besides the fun aspects, the movie has great takeaways that I’ve leveraged as CEO of Duda. My favorite quote from the film is: “Well, sir, it’s this rug I had. It really tied the room together.” I  believe every business has its own version of “the rug,” a unique center of gravity that ties the company together. In our case, it is the strong relationship between Amir and me that serves as the foundation of Duda and generates strong values. Many of the lessons that have guided us in building the business come straight from this cult classic. Here are seven that continue to shape the way we run our company.

1. Camaraderie: Caring and being there for one another

“F*ck it, Dude. Let’s go bowling.” – Walter Sobchak

The bonds we create with those around us, especially the ones forged through shared history and overcoming adversity together, become some of the deepest roots in our lives. They remind us of who we are, help us feel grounded and bring a joy that no material success can match. In “The Big Lebowski,” Walter isn’t just talking about bowling; it’s about moving forward. Life is messy and far from perfect. We can agree to disagree and still rely on each other, finding comfort in the familiar.

2. Leadership: “The Dude” and the power of authenticity

“The Dude abides.” – The Dude

In business, leaders who remain authentic and calm under pressure foster trust and stability within their teams. Like The Dude, who doesn’t pretend to be something he’s not, great leaders embrace their individual style, values and quirks rather than forcing themselves into a one-size-fits-all mold. Authentic leadership inspires loyalty and resilience. People follow those who “abide,” even in challenging times.

3. Teamwork: The bowling team as a cross-functional squad

“Smokey, this is not ‘Nam. This is bowling. There are rules.” – Walter Sobchak

In business, diverse teams can work together effectively as long as they share a clear vision and a common objective (or at least a shared direction). Walter, Donny and The Dude are wildly different in skills, temperament and worldview. And yet they keep showing up for each other; united by a shared goal and their love for bowling.  Differences don’t have to derail collaboration; they can make it stronger as long as you keep rolling toward the same pins.

4. Overcoming challenges: The rug that really tied the room together

In business, unexpected setbacks, like having your “rug” stolen, can throw plans into disarray. The journey of an entrepreneur is filled with setbacks and challenges, including changing market dynamics or the emergence of a new competitor in your market. The goal of a strong management team is to find a way to overcome these challenges. The Dude’s quest to retrieve his rug mirrors how companies must adapt when a key resource or advantage is lost. Tough situations can spark new innovations or new partnerships, even if the path there is unconventional (or full of mistaken identities).

5. Conflict management: The importance of emotional regulation

“Am I the only one around here who gives a s*** about the rules?!” – Walter Sobchak

In business, going “full Walter” when conflict arises can damage relationships and derail progress. Which one of us hasn’t received an annoying Slack message from a peer or a frustrating response from a customer? It’s essential to maintain your perspective, manage your emotions, resist the urge for immediate retaliation and focus on finding effective solutions. A blow-up over something small, like a bowling foul, can overshadow bigger goals.

6. Growth mindset: From chaos to clarity

“Yeah, well, you know, that’s just, like, your opinion, man.” – The Dude

Employees must remain open to learning, reframing problems and adjusting their course. No one expects you to get everything right on the first shot. It’s about trying new things and being flexible. The Dude doesn’t have all the answers at the start, but he stays curious, asks questions and connects dots in his own way to solve the mystery around Bonny’s alleged kidnapping.

7. Risk management: Avoiding nihilists in negotiations

“We believe in nothing, Lebowski!” – Franz (the nihilist)

Identify your champion in any customer relationship. This is the person who sees the most value from your product/service and will fight to get the deal done within their company. Aside from the champion, you should also map out all the key stakeholders and understand their motivations so you can articulate your value proposition to align with their needs. The nihilists in the movie represent parties who claim they have nothing to lose and hence have no real stake in the outcome. We know that was not true; their stated “ideology” was just part of their schtick. What they truly wanted was easy money without doing the hard work. In business, everyone is trying to achieve something; it’s your role as a seller to identify and align incentives.
