A Simple Weekly Reflection Practice That Works

Ferris Bueller said it best: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

For many leaders, life does move fast — from back-to-back meetings to constant deadlines. But without reflection, we miss opportunities to learn and grow. That’s where a simple tool called Plus / Minus / Next can make a big difference.

Here’s how it works:

Plus: Write down what went well this week — accomplishments, good conversations, things you’re proud of.

Minus: Capture the frustrations — deadlines you missed, energy drains, or moments you’d like to improve.

Next: Note how you’ll iterate for the week ahead. What do you want to change, adjust, or experiment with?

It takes just a few minutes and can be part of your weekly journaling or Friday wrap-up.

This weekly reflection practice creates a feedback loop that helps you celebrate wins, acknowledge challenges, and keep momentum moving forward.

Because yes — life moves fast. But you don’t have to miss the lessons.

Read more on the benefits for journaling to help structure your week.
