Skeleton Technologies, Europe’s leading innovator in high-power energy storage, has officially opened its new SuperBattery factory in Varkaus, Finland

With an investment of €50 million, the site represents a significant milestone for European energy independence, the AI industry, and advanced manufacturing.

The SuperBattery factory is the first facility in Europe dedicated to producing high-power batteries for AI data centres, and the first in the world to industrialise backup power systems designed for mission-critical computing and emerging fields such as nuclear fusion.

Europe’s energy sovereignty

The launch of the Varkaus SuperBattery factory strengthens Europe’s position in the global energy technology race. As demand for data-intensive AI systems surges, so does the need for sustainable, high-performance energy storage.

By localising battery production in Finland, Skeleton reduces reliance on global supply chains while reinforcing European manufacturing capacity in strategic industries such as AI infrastructure, e-mobility, and grid stability.

The new SuperBattery factory breathes new life into a site once owned by European Batteries Oy, the pioneering company that first produced Lithium-Iron-Phosphate (LFP) batteries in Europe. With Skeleton’s investment, Varkaus is reclaiming its place as a hub for Finnish battery innovation, merging industrial heritage with cutting-edge technology to meet the power demands of the digital age.

SuperBattery technology for the AI era

Skeleton’s SuperBattery technology is designed to deliver extreme power, rapid charging, and unmatched durability. At the centre of this innovation is the use of CBMM’s NBXCELER™ niobium oxides. Developed in partnership with CBMM, these advanced materials enhance safety, performance, and lifetime, making the SuperBattery ideally suited for AI data centres and industrial applications that demand reliability under high load.

Niobium’s unique properties enable faster energy transfer and greater thermal stability, addressing a key challenge in powering AI systems that require consistent, high-density energy. With its combination of speed, longevity, and safety, the SuperBattery closes the gap between conventional lithium-ion batteries and ultracapacitors, providing a sustainable solution for next-generation computing and mobility.

Finland’s clean technology ecosystem

The establishment of the SuperBattery factory brings significant economic and technological benefits to Eastern Finland.

Skeleton currently employs more than 65 people in Finland and plans to expand the Varkaus team to over 200 employees by 2029. The factory’s advanced production lines and research facilities are expected to attract new talent and partnerships in energy storage, materials science, and the development of AI infrastructure.

This expansion positions Finland as a leader in Europe’s battery value chain and a vital player in the continent’s transition to clean, secure, and high-performance energy systems. It also supports the region’s broader ambitions to become a central hub for sustainable technologies serving industries from transportation to defence.

The next generation of infrastructure

The Varkaus facility will produce one gigawatt of high-power batteries annually, which will be enough to support data centres, grid balancing systems, electric transport, and other energy-intensive sectors.

By combining European engineering expertise with advanced materials from global partners, Skeleton’s new factory represents a fusion of innovation, sustainability, and industrial revival.

With the launch of the SuperBattery factory, Finland and Europe are taking a decisive step toward a future where AI, mobility, and clean energy work hand in hand.
