€118 million will be put towards breakthroughs in European Research

The European Innovation Council (EIC) has announced €118 million in funding for 30 research projects under its 2025 EIC Pathfinder Challenges call

The projects under the EIC Pathfinder Challenges hope to support high-risk, high-reward innovations that could shape the future of technology, healthcare, sustainability, and industry across Europe.

Selected from a highly competitive pool of 647 eligible proposals, each project will receive an average of €3.93 million. The funding targets early-stage research with transformative potential, particularly at low technology readiness levels where bold ideas are still being explored and tested.

Focusing on four key areas

The funded projects are concentrated in four key domains that cover Europe’s long-term priorities. These include biotechnology for climate-resilient crops, AI-driven healthcare solutions for cancer, autonomous robot collectives for construction, and waste-to-value technologies for circular production systems.

Together, these areas address pressing global challenges, including food security, sustainable industrial practices, advanced healthcare, and environmental resilience. The project’s aim is to generate scientific breakthroughs and to lay the groundwork for scalable, real-world applications.

Standout innovations

Some of the selected projects from the EIC Pathfinder Challenges highlight the programme’s diversity and ambition.

INPROBED is working on a new approach to plant biotechnology by shifting from traditional gene editing to precision promoter engineering. Using single-cell data and deep learning, the project aims to better understand and control gene activation in plant cells. This could lead to crops that are more resilient to heat, drought, and poor soil conditions while also improving nutritional value.

LUMINA focuses on transforming cancer care through advanced AI systems. By integrating physics-informed models with attention-based algorithms, the project aims to improve diagnosis and treatment, particularly for lung cancer. Its platform is adaptable to other cancers, offering tools for both clinicians and patients to support decision-making and disease management.

SITEBOT addresses challenges in the construction industry by developing autonomous robot collectives capable of working together in complex environments. The project’s goal is to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability in timber-based construction through coordinated robotic systems and human–robot collaboration frameworks.

PROPEL is exploring new ways to produce protein-based materials and biocatalysts using synthetic biology. By combining renewable inputs, fermentation techniques, and waste valorisation, the project aims to make industrial protein production more scalable and cost-effective.

The selected projects show a strong mix of participants from academia, industry, and research institutions. Higher education institutions account for 41% of participants, followed by private companies at 29% and research organisations at 24%.

This joint approach is key to the EIC Pathfinder programme, which encourages interdisciplinary partnerships to tackle complex scientific and technological challenges.

Support for growth

In addition to financial support, the selected teams will benefit from tailored coaching and mentoring through the EIC Business Acceleration Services. They may also gain fast-track access to further funding opportunities, including the EIC Accelerator, which supports the commercialisation of innovations.

EIC Programme Managers will play an active role in guiding the projects, helping to build portfolios that combine complementary approaches and maximise overall impact.

Looking ahead to 2026

With grant agreements now in preparation, the newly selected projects are set to begin their research journeys. Meanwhile, the EIC is already looking ahead, with the next Pathfinder Challenges call open until 28 October 2026.

Future funding will focus on advanced materials for energy harvesting, biotechnology for healthy ageing, and next-generation AI systems designed for deep reasoning and trustworthy decision-making.
