The Jagged Edge of AI: What Leaders Need to Understand
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Leaders should not view AI as either fully reliable or completely unusable. Instead, they need to understand the jagged edge of AI. The jagged edge refers to the boundary between where AI performs well and where it still produces unreliable results.

This boundary is not fixed. It is moving quickly as AI systems improve through additional data, user feedback, and built-in safeguards. Tasks that produced poor outputs six months ago may now deliver strong results.

The practical challenge for leaders is identifying where AI is effective today. When AI produces weak or unclear results—often called “AI slop”—that signals the current edge. These limitations should be noted and revisited over time, as the capability may improve.

Dismissing AI entirely because of these limitations creates risk. At the same time, relying on AI without understanding its limits can lead to poor decisions. Effective use requires both experimentation and judgment.

Leaders who actively track the jagged edge can apply AI where it adds value while avoiding areas where it is not yet reliable.

Takeaway: The jagged edge of AI is the moving boundary between reliable and unreliable performance, and leaders who monitor it can use AI effectively without being misled.
