Building Buzz and Breaking Barriers: Julia Matina’s PR Journey
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Are you ready to explore the power of public relations and how it shapes the narratives of your favorite celebrities and influencers? In a media-driven world where stories influence perceptions, publicists play a key role in amplifying voices, spotlighting stories, and driving conversations that inspire change. Julia Matina, a rising force in the PR industry at Emily Blair Media, shares her journey—from studying abroad in Florence to working on high-profile magazine covers—fueling her passion for strategic storytelling. In this exclusive interview, she discusses the impact of media, the fast-paced world of publicity, and what sets Emily Blair Media apart in an ever-evolving industry.

Meghan Forte: In what ways do you feel that being a publicist can inspire the next generation? (with media’s influence, etc)?

Julia Matina: As a publicist, you have the ability to shape narratives, highlight important issues, and bring attention to voices and stories that might otherwise go unheard.  In today’s media-driven society, where people’s opinions are heavily influenced by what they see and hear, this power is huge. Being a publicist demonstrates how impactful effective communication and strategic storytelling can be in shaping opinion, building and maintaining a positive reputation, and raising awareness about various topics, companies, and individuals.

Meghan Forte:  Where did you study and what drew you to becoming a publicist, and working with Emily Blair Media?

Julia Matina: I earned my bachelor’s degree from SUNY Geneseo.  My college experience was quite unique—I only spent two years on campus and then studied abroad in Florence, Italy, for a year.  Unfortunately, when COVID hit, I was among the last Americans to return home, missing the charter flight Governor Cuomo sent (totally not on purpose).  My senior year of college involved cold calling, studying for the LSAT for a potential career in entertainment law, and reading the CAA Powerhouse book—hoping to one day have lunch with Michael Ovitz.  I landed an awesome internship at Young Hollywood, working with Joely Live.  So, I flew to LA and chose to finish my last year of college online.

Growing up with parents who owned a production company and studios, I was immersed in the entertainment world from a young age.  I did a lot of child acting on Sesame Street and PBS Kids, and spent hours at my parent’s studio, which made the industry feel like a natural fit.  I took several PR courses in college and was drawn to Emily Blair Media’s (EBM) small, specialized team.  I loved the creative freedom and the exciting projects Emily and the team were working on.  The hands-on environment and flexibility were especially important to me, particularly with my move from New York to Los Angeles.  My first week involved being on set for a Forbes cover shoot.  That experience solidified my feeling that I was exactly where I wanted to be.  Everything just seemed to fall into place.

Meghan Forte: What makes Emily Blair Media unique?

Julia Matina: What sets EBM apart is our small, specialized team.  As avid consumers of the content our clients produce, we have a natural understanding of what resonates with their audiences and which strategies will be most effective.  Our team collaborates seamlessly across our LA, NY, and UK offices, blending diverse perspectives and expertise.  This global yet close-knit approach ensures we stay ahead of industry trends and deliver exceptional, personalized service to our clients, no matter where they are.

Meghan Forte:  What is the behind the scenes like for a publicist that many may not be aware of?

Julia Matina: Being a publicist is a whirlwind job and every day is extremely different.  Much of the work happens behind the scenes—crafting press releases and pitches, campaign strategy, averting PR crises, building media relationships, setting up photoshoots or building fashion week itineraries, handling last-minute changes and media requests, etc.  This role requires a lot of patience and great attention to detail, but the satisfaction of our clients makes every effort worthwhile.

Meghan Forte: What are some of your specializations in your field ( do you focus on PR in a particular field like healthcare, literature, finance, etch, in addition to entertainment?)

Julia Matina: I lead the Entertainment Division at EBM, where I represent a diverse roster of talent, including artists, reality TV personalities, actors, actresses, television hosts, and podcasters, and more.

Meghan Forte: What are your favorite books?

Julia Matina: Love psychological thrillers…The Talented Mr. Ripley, Strangers on a Train, etc.
